The First Rain Checklist for Santa Cruz County Gardens

The first real storm of the season in Santa Cruz County can arrive any time from early October to early December, with no reliable date to plan around, and the work that protects your garden has to be done before it, not during it. Cover bare soil, clear drainage, shut off or override the irrigation controller, stake young trees, and move stored amendments under a roof. According to the 30-year rain-year normals published by the National Weather Service office serving the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas, normal precipitation runs from about 23.50 inches at the Watsonville station to 31.35 inches at Santa Cruz and 50.48 inches at Ben Lomond, so how much water hits your garden depends heavily on where in the county you garden.

That spread is why a generic fall checklist does not work here. A Watsonville flat and a Ben Lomond hillside see more than a two-fold difference in annual rain, and the hillside gets it on a slope, under redwoods, on soil that has been dry since June.

When Does the First Real Rain Usually Arrive in Santa Cruz County?

The rain year that the National Weather Service tracks for this region runs July 1 through June 30, and the bulk of our precipitation arrives between November and March. Long-term records for the Santa Cruz climate station show an October average of 1.39 inches against 3.31 in November and 5.24 in December, so October is genuinely a transitional month rather than the start of the wet season. Some years it delivers a genuine soaking storm in the first week, and some years it stays dry until Thanksgiving.

The practical rule: treat the last week of September as your deadline for the structural work, and treat every October forecast as a possible start date. Waiting for a rain forecast to begin is how people end up tarping a slope in the dark.

One local pattern is worth knowing. The first storms of the season often do more damage than their rainfall totals suggest, because they land on soil that has been dry for months and sheds water before it soaks in, and on hillsides carrying the least ground cover they will have all year. Fog drip under the redwoods moves some moisture into the soil through the dry season, but it does not substitute for a soaking storm on a slope that has been drying since June.

How Do You Protect Bare Soil on a Santa Cruz Slope?

Bare soil on a slope is the single biggest thing to fix, and the fix is cover. UC Marin Master Gardeners put drainage runoff at the top of the hillside problem list, and their mulch rule for a hillside is short: choose mulch that stays in place.

The catch is that not all mulch stays put. UC Marin Master Gardeners are specific about this: straw, small bark, or cocoa hulls wash away with rain. Large chunks are typically most effective, and heavier is better. On a Boulder Creek or Bonny Doon slope, that means coarse arborist wood chips rather than the fine bark you would use in a flat front bed.

Depth matters too. UC Statewide IPM recommends keeping organic mulch at a depth of 3 to 4 inches, with coarse-textured mulches applied up to 4 inches and fine-textured mulches only to about 2 inches. Going deeper than 4 inches can injure plants by keeping the soil too wet and limiting oxygen to the roots, which is a real risk in a wet Santa Cruz Mountains winter.

One tradeoff is worth naming rather than glossing over. The same UC IPM page gets its best weed control from mulch pieces about a quarter inch to three quarters of an inch across, and says pieces larger than an inch and a half do not suppress weeds well unless they are laid 6 inches deep or more. Chunky arborist chips are still the right call on a slope, because a mulch that washes downhill controls nothing, but plan on pulling more weeds through them than you would through a finer mulch on flat ground.

For slopes steep enough that even chunky mulch moves, UC Marin Master Gardeners recommend temporary erosion control measures for the first couple of years after a new landscape is installed, which may include wattles (long straw or fiber tubes) that slow down runoff and retain the hillside until the roots of new vegetation secure it. They also advise relying on professionals for correct installation of wattles and other drainage work.

The short version for storm prep: a cover crop sown in early October has time to root before the heavy rain, but a cover crop sown after the first storm is just bare soil with seed on it for the first three weeks.

Do this now: Walk your property and mark every patch of bare soil bigger than a doormat, then cover it. Bare ground on a slope is the thing that becomes a rill.

What Drainage Should You Check Before the First Storm?

Water finds the path you built for it, including the ones you built by accident.

Gutters and downspouts on garden structures. Sheds, greenhouses, chicken coops, and lath houses all shed roof water somewhere. A 10 by 12 foot shed roof in a 1-inch storm sheds roughly 75 gallons, since one inch of rain on a square foot is about 0.623 gallons. If that discharges onto the uphill side of a raised bed, the bed floods; if it discharges at the base of a slope, it undercuts it. Clear the gutters, confirm the downspout extension carries water at least 4 feet away from any bed or foundation, and check that the outlet is not pointed at a path. Redwood needles are the local complication: they are fine enough to mat and clog a gutter screen rather than washing through, so plan to clear twice, once in early October and again in December after the heaviest needle drop.

Swales, ditches, and dry creeks. The UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County notes that ditches are vital on steeper slopes, that dry creeks are ditches covered with rock, and that swales (plant-filled ditches) are very effective at diverting and slowing runoff. Whatever version you have, clear the accumulated summer debris out of it now. A blocked swale is worse than no swale because it concentrates water into one overflow point.

Paths. The same UC Contra Costa guidance warns that soil compaction diminishes the soil's capacity to absorb water and can result in increased erosion and topsoil loss, and recommends using designated pathways when walking on or maintaining a hillside. That cuts both ways: your paths are compacted by design, which means they will run water like a channel. Top them with coarse wood chips or gravel before the storm, and if a path runs straight downhill, add a couple of shallow cross-drains so water leaves the path instead of accelerating down it.

Raised beds. A raised bed drains from the bottom, so if the surrounding grade holds water, the bed does not actually drain. Check that no bed sits in a low spot that will pond, and where you cannot regrade, add a few inches of gravel under the bed footprint.

Do this now: Run a hose into each downspout and swale and watch where the water actually goes. Ten minutes of this finds problems that no amount of looking will.

Should You Turn Off Your Irrigation Controller After the First Rain?

Not immediately, and not all at once.

One storm wets the top few inches of soil and very little below that, especially where the soil has been dry since June. Established trees and shrubs with deep root systems will not be reached by a half-inch storm at all. The sequence that works here is: after the first storm, dig down 6 inches in a couple of representative spots and see what you find. Moist to 6 inches means you can skip a cycle. Dry at 3 inches means the storm was a surface event.

What you should do before the first storm is make sure the system will not run during it. If you have a rain shutoff sensor, test it by wetting it and confirming the controller skips the cycle. Sensors mounted under an eave or inside a redwood canopy often never get wet enough to trigger, which is a common cause of sprinklers running in a downpour. If you have an older controller with no sensor, put it in the off position manually and set a calendar reminder to check soil moisture in two weeks rather than relying on memory.

Drip systems need one extra step: run each zone once in late September and walk the lines, because summer sun degrades emitters and rodent damage shows up as a wet spot you will not notice once everything is wet.

What Needs to Move Under Cover Before It Rains?

Anything that is ruined by getting wet, and anything that becomes 200 pounds when it does.

  • Bagged amendments and potting mix. Opened bags of compost, worm castings, bone meal, and feather meal turn into a solid brick or a mold farm. Move them into a shed, a garage, or under a tarp with airflow. Wet bone meal and blood meal also become a strong wildlife attractant, which here means raccoons at minimum.
  • Seed. Saved seed and leftover packets need to be dry and rodent-proof. A lidded plastic bin with a silica pack beats a paper bag on a shelf. Seed stored damp through a Santa Cruz winter germinates poorly in spring, and you will not find out until you have wasted a bed.
  • Tools. Hand tools left out through a wet winter come back pitted. A wipe-down with an oily rag before storage is the whole job.
  • Bulbs and tubers not going in the ground. Dahlias and similar need dry, ventilated storage, not a sealed bin.

How Should You Manage the Compost Pile Through the Rainy Season?

The target is unchanged, but the risk flips from too dry to too wet. UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County advise keeping the pile as moist as a wrung-out sponge, and note that covering the pile helps maintain moisture and heat, with tarps, cardboard, or straw all serving as covers while allowing air to circulate under or through.

In a Santa Cruz Mountains winter, an uncovered open pile goes anaerobic quickly. Waterlogged compost stops heating and starts to smell, which UC Master Gardeners flag as the sign of a pile that is too wet or too compacted. Cover it before the first storm, and leave the sides open so air still moves through.

Size helps as well. UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County recommend a structure 3 to 5 feet on each side, with the pile at least 3 feet to generate enough heat. A small pile in a wet winter will not heat at all.

Site the pile where runoff does not flow through it, and where leachate does not run into a creek or a neighbor's property. On a slope, that means a bench cut into the hill, not the fall line.

When Should You Stake Young Trees for Winter Wind?

Before the storms, and only where the site actually calls for it.

According to the UC Master Gardener Program of Contra Costa County, the first step after planting is to remove the ties holding the tree to the nursery stake and remove that stake, then restake only if the tree needs it. Their test is not simply whether the tree stands up: a tree that stands strong on its own still needs staking if it is planted in a windy location or on a slope, which describes a great deal of this county. Trees planted in sandy soil, and top-heavy trees with no lower branches, are on their list as well. Where staking is needed, they recommend two stakes placed outside the root ball on opposite sides of the tree, oriented so the prevailing wind blows between them.

To find the tie height, support the trunk by hand starting around 3 feet up and move your hand higher until the tree stands upright. That is where the ties go, and there is no need for additional ties above or below that point. Ties should be flexible and form a loose loop with a wide, smooth surface so they do not girdle the trunk.

The reason to keep it minimal: movement of the tree encourages the trunk to fully develop enough to support the weight of branches, leaves, and fruit. A tree held rigid for two years grows a weak trunk and fails the first time the stakes come off. UC guidance is to plan to remove stakes before one year.

Local note: in saturated Santa Cruz Mountains soil, the failure mode in a wind event is not usually a snapped trunk but the whole root ball rocking loose. Check any tree planted in the last two seasons, staked or not. If the trunk moves and the soil at its base moves with it, the root ball needs firming and support.

What Does the First Rain Mean for Established Plants Versus New Plantings?

Established plants (in the ground two or more years). The first rain is largely a signal, not a supply. It will not reach the deep roots that carry an established oak, olive, or mature fruit tree. Keep supplemental irrigation available until soils stay wet between storms, which takes several soaking storms rather than one. This is the same reason fire risk persists past the first drizzle.

Fall plantings (in the ground weeks, not years). These are the winners of the season. Root systems on fall-planted natives, perennials, and trees develop through the cool wet months and are noticeably better established by the following summer than anything planted in spring. New plantings still need hand-watering between storms during a dry October, because a shallow root ball dries out even in cool weather.

New plantings on slopes. The vulnerable window is between planting and root establishment. UC Contra Costa guidance is that roots of grasses, shrubs, and trees stabilize soil and stop erosion, and that aggressive groundcovers that crawl and root along the top of the soil are best at reducing topsoil loss. Until those roots are in place, the mulch and wattles are doing the work.

How Do You Use the Germination Window the First Rain Opens?

The first soaking storm triggers a flush of germination across your whole property, weeds and desirable seed alike. That flush is both the biggest weeding opportunity of the year and the sowing window for California natives.

Hoe the weed flush young. UC Statewide IPM is clear that frequent removal of weeds when they are small and have not yet set seed will rapidly reduce the number of annual weeds over time, and advises removing young weeds by hand before they flower and set seed. Usually a week or two after the first real storm, you will have a carpet of seedlings at the thread stage. A sharp stirrup hoe run shallow through them on a dry morning kills essentially all of them for almost no effort. Wait three weeks and you are pulling by hand.

Two local notes. Run the hoe shallow, an inch at most: UC IPM warns that deep tilling brings buried weed seeds to the surface and starts the cycle over. And do it on a morning when the surface is drying, not right after rain, because seedlings uprooted into wet soil will re-root.

Sow California natives into the same window. Native annual and perennial seed here germinates on the first sustained rains and grows through the cool season. Sowing at or just after the first real storm gives seedlings the longest run at the wet season.

One or two light storms rewet only the surface, and dead fuel dries out again within days of a warm, dry, windy spell.
