The Verdict: Busted. Slugs crawl right over crushed eggshells without hesitation.

Why People Believe This

The logic sounds airtight. Slugs have soft, slimy bodies. Eggshells are sharp. Therefore, slugs would avoid crawling over them like we would avoid walking on broken glass. It is a tidy story, and it gives us a satisfying use for kitchen waste. Unfortunately, slugs did not read the same logic textbook.

What the Research Says

Multiple controlled studies, including trials documented by Oregon State Extension and the Royal Horticultural Society, have tested this directly. Slugs glide over crushed eggshells without slowing down. Their mucus layer protects them from the edges entirely. Researchers at the RHS tested eggshells alongside other common "barriers" (copper tape, grit, wool pellets) and found that eggshells provided zero deterrent effect. Even finely crushed shells made no difference.

Here in Santa Cruz County, our damp coastal climate creates prime slug habitat from October through May. If you have been relying on eggshells around your lettuce, you have been giving your slugs a fancy runway.

What to Do Instead

For effective slug management in our area, UC IPM recommends iron phosphate baits (sold as Sluggo), which are approved for organic gardens and safe around pets. Hand-picking slugs in the evening with a headlamp is surprisingly effective. You can also reduce slug habitat by watering in the morning instead of evening, so the soil surface dries before their active hours. Drip irrigation helps too, since it keeps the areas between plants drier.

This week: Go out after dark with a flashlight and hand-pick slugs for three evenings in a row. You will be amazed at how much damage drops off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do crushed eggshells actually stop slugs?

No. Controlled trials documented by Oregon State Extension and the Royal Horticultural Society found that slugs glide right over crushed eggshells without slowing down. Their mucus layer protects them from the sharp edges entirely, and even finely crushed shells made no difference.

When are slugs worst in Santa Cruz County?

Our damp coastal climate creates prime slug habitat from October through May, so relying on a barrier that does not work leaves your lettuce exposed during the wettest, most slug-friendly months.

What actually controls slugs in a coastal garden?

UC IPM recommends iron phosphate baits (sold as Sluggo), which are approved for organic gardens and safe around pets. Hand-picking after dark with a headlamp is surprisingly effective, and watering in the morning instead of evening lets the soil surface dry before slugs become active.

Does drip irrigation help with slugs?

Yes. Drip irrigation keeps the areas between plants drier, which reduces the moist habitat slugs prefer.
